Early morning exploration of Grand Teton National Park

Location

This photo was taken during a self-guided tour of the grounds of Manzanar Historic Site which was a WWII relocation center where Japanese Americans were unjustly imprisoned beginning in 1942 following the bombing of Pearl Harbor. There is a museum there now and you can drive the grounds to see remnants of the camp. The site is in the high desert off of US 395 near the town of Lone Pine and NE of the Sierra Nevada range.

Time

This was taken in early November 2001. Based on the shadows and the SW direction to face the mountains, I would guess early afternoon. The shadows on Lone Pine peak suggest that the sun has moved slightly toward the western side.

Lighting

I was fortunate that this was a beautiful sunny day and that the sun wasn't directly overhead. I went back to this location earlier this year and took the same picture on a rainy, cloudy spring day. Still a pretty shot, but not nearly as breathtaking.

Equipment

This was taken with a Kodak DC4800 Digital Zoom camera. No other equipment.

Inspiration

This was pure serendipity. My family enjoys vacationing in the Eastern Sierras. We were on our way to Bishop, CA, when we decided to stop for the historical marker for Manzanar. We found a map for a self-guided driving tour to see the grounds. As we rounded a corner, this was the amazing view directly in front of us. My contribution to this photo was pure composition. All else was as nature presented it.

Editing

I may have done minor cropping, but nothing else.

In my camera bag

This was my first digital camera and it was a point and shoot. I now have a Canon EOS 6D body with a standard 50mm lens and a 75-300mm zoom lens. Frankly, as an amateur, I've not spent the time to learn my expensive camera well enough. Some day. In the meantime, I focus on enjoying the scenery and composing the shot.
