Behind The Lens

Location

This was in the back banquet hall of the church. There was beautiful light there and the groom wanted a picture with his grandmother. I put them in the light and let them do the rest.

Time

This was early afternoon right before the wedding ceremony.

Lighting

The light came for a single window. I made sure to turn off all other lights and close the drapery to the other windows. Setting the scene for the action to unfold

Equipment

My set up at the time was a Canon 5D Mark II with the Canon 70-200mm 2.8L lens.

Inspiration

I love weddings. I love relationships. That inspires me constantly.

Editing

I converted the image to black and white using Nik Silver Efex Pro

In my camera bag

Currently in my bag I have: Canon 1DX; 70-200mm 2.8L; 135mm 2.0L; 100mm 2.8L Macro; 24-70mm 2.8L; 35 mm 2.0L; 16-35mm 2.8L. I use two Canon 600EX-RT Speedlites when needed; and I have two Ice Light 1.

Feedback

First find the best possible light and make it better. Turn off all lights and shut drapes that don't add to the quality of light. Make sure that your background is not cluttered. The simpler the better. Again, setting the scene so that when the action does take place, the subjects are in the perfect light. Put your subject in the quality light and get them to interact. A picture like this one can't really be posed. The love between grandmother and grandson is genuine so the image has to be as well to be great.
