Behind The Lens

Location

I took this image at Fort DeSoto State Park in St. Petersburg, Florida on the North end beach.

Time

It was nearing time for sunset. Around 6pm.

Lighting

The sun was in and out and as typical of Florida weather we were about to have our daily August thunder-boomer. I am very used to this in Florida summers and always carry a weather proof bag in case it rains. Shortly after I made this capture I felt rain. I covered my gear and luckily ran under the nearby fishing pier. It poured for about 10 minutes and gave way to a very unique sunset which I also captured.

Equipment

It was shot with a Nikon D7100, 10-24mm Nikor at 10mm, three exposures (1/80 at f/16, 1/60 at f/16 and 1/50 at f/16), ISO 100, Hoya NXT Circular Polarizer. Manfrotto tripod.

Inspiration

Often we see enormous cloud formations in Florida. This is what we call a "shelf cloud". Always wanted to capture one and I was in the right place at the right time with the right gear. The shape of the formation tickled my eye.

Editing

Pro PhotoMatix, Perfect Effects, Topaz Denoise, Lightroom.

In my camera bag

I always carry a tactical flashlight for light painting, cleaning supplies and tools, my Nodal Ninja pan head, my D7100, 10-24mm, 18-55mm, Lee Big Stopper, Polarizers, and step up rings.

Feedback

Use a tripod. A good polarizer really matters. It helps to define the clouds much better. Always bring weather proofing to protect your gear.
