Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo during a family vacation in Dubai at our favourite Iraqi restaurant; Samad.

Time

This photo was taken at night after a long wonderful day spend with family; you can even see the bag that had my mother's gift in. We were sitting at the restaurant near the window sipping the traditional cardamom tea.

Lighting

I'm not a professional photographer and I was on vacation so I had to work with what I had. I liked how the glass, called Istikan in Iraqi, and the colour of the tea compliment each other. I took advantage of the lights hanging outside to add the extra sparkle to the photo.

Equipment

I used my Canon Rebel T3i with a typical 18-55 mm lens with no flash as I am not a fan of flash.

Inspiration

This is was an impulsive photo; no planning was involved. I was having an amazing time with the family and wanted to capture a special photo that will remind me of that night.

Editing

I slightly brightened the photo as I could not control light while taking the shot. I also increased the saturation to give a photo with rich colours.

In my camera bag

As a university student studying sciences, I don't have a lot of equipment. My bag has my Rebel T3i camera, an 18-55 mm lens, a remote in case of a group photo, charger and an extra battery. Hoping to increase my equipment since photography is a passion to me.

Feedback

You can always go to an Iraqi restaurant and find the tea served in the same way; in an "Istikan." This was a rather lucky shot since I was sitting close to the window and the lights outside were set during a holiday. Without the lights, the picture will be less impressive. The key to this shot is finding the right light and the right angle. I took this picture a few years ago and If I have the chance to retake it; I would slightly improve the angle and maybe remove the spoon :)
