Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in one of the small bathrooms at my workplace.

Time

The window light is perfect in during early to mid- afternoon around 2:00 PM in the summer.

Lighting

I prefer natural light and rarely shoot with artificial light (i.e. a flash or studio lights). Window light is especially intriguing to me.

Equipment

The photo was shot utilizing a Fuji X10 camera mounted on a tripod utilizing the self-timer. I can't remember which camera I'm holding but it was either my Nikon F100 or F4, both film cameras from my pre-digital days.

Inspiration

I'm attracted to the interplay of light and shadow. Rembrandt's portraiture has been an inspiration to me. There is a depth to his work that I tried to emulate in this image.

Editing

I did add vignetting to the image to emphasize the contrast between light and dark.

In my camera bag

My Fuji X10 was my favorite go-to camera for quite a while. I like the old rangefinder design and optical viewfinder. Lately, I've been packing a Panasonic DMC-GM1 because of its compact size, the ability to change lenses and the relatively large sensor size. I can also utilize my range of Nikon lenses with an adapter.

Feedback

Seek out anything that captures your eye. For me, I like to play with the idea of contrast: light and shadow, focus and blur, lines and curves. And it's important to have a central subject. Above all, play with your photography. Shoot a subject from every possible angle, in different settings if possible. Bracket your shots, shoot at a slow shutter speed and deliberately blur your image. It's about having fun and seeing what you can produce. You may be surprised at the images your produce.
