Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Erindi Game Reserve in Namibia in 2013 on my first trip to Africa.

Time

It was fairly early in the morning on a game drive..

Lighting

Namibia is well known for very harsh lighting conditions. The landscapes are very arid and everything is extremely dry as they receive very little rainfall.

Equipment

I took this photo with a Canon 70D using a Canon 100-400 lens.

Inspiration

As it was my first trip to Africa and Namibia in particular we happened upon lions devouring this kill. We did not witness the kill but there was more than one lion. This big male had taken the prize away from his female companion.

Editing

I use lightroom to edit my photos.

In my camera bag

I have travelled to Africa several times now and am a confirmed Canon shooter. I now carry a Canon 7D MK11 with a variety of lens. A Tamron 150-600mm G2 is now my preferred telephoto lens. As any place in Africa has beautiful landscapes a wide angle lens is essential part of y equipment. I carry a 24-105mm wide angle.

Feedback

Like I previous said some parts of Africa and Namibia in particular have hard lighting conditions. The sunrise and sunsets are to die for. I think the most beautiful sunrise and sunsets occur there. Wildlife photography is all about luck in what you might come across to photograph. The one thing I am sure of is once you have been to Africa your life will never be the same and you will long to return.
