This photo was taken In a Active ghost town called Silver City, Idaho. All buildings are Privately owned and are restored to there original likeness from the 1860's.Time
The time of day for this picture was at 1 p.m. Was walking around exploring the town with the family when a thunderstorm came through, which is typical for Idaho mountains in late August.Lighting
Lighting this shot was one of those being in the right places at the right time. After a thunder storm came over us and started to brake up the sun was peaking through the clouds casting its rays on the church. That I happened to be by at the time seeking shelter till the storm had past.Equipment
camera equipment used was a canon T3i, with a 50mm f/1.4. Shot at Iso 200, 1/250 sec,f/7 and minus one stop on exposure. Had the t3i that day just because it is light weight. The town is the Idaho Owyhee mountain range and the town was built in rocky terrain.Inspiration
I was enjoying a family trip to Silver city looking to document some of the towns old buildings and history to make a photo book. When a thunderstorm came through and had us take shelter under an awning located just below the church. When the storm passed the sun came through the clouds shinning rays right down on the church. Is if the Lord himself said here is a picture for you to take.Editing
For post processing, I used lightroom and made the normal editing adjustments, then opened in Photoshop, from there i opened it in Silver effects pro 2. reduced dynamic brightness, added contrast, reduced the tonal range, and reduced the blue and greens. Then used the dodge tool to lighten the steep path to the church.In my camera bag
Normally in my camera bag there is two cameras, The Canon rebel T3i and the Canon 6d. The lenses are the nifty 50mm f1.4, for light weight. Being that i have had 2 neck surgeries done. 24-105 f.4 for an all around lens. Lastly a 70-300mm sti f3.6-5.6 for wild life. The T3i and 50mm I use for when I want to travel light and do not want to carry around the heavy 6D. More so when you are hiking around mountain terrain.Feedback
For those looking to take a similar shot, plan ahead and check the weather reports for thunderstorms and or clouds. I have defiantly learned the thunderstorms and cloudy days can make for some really interesting landscapes and add interest in the skies. Take a plastic grocery bag to cover your camera to protect it from the rain.
