This photo was taken when I went on an Eastern Mediterranean Cruise. We spent a day in Santorini, and I was amazed by the unique hillside architecture of homes there. The town of Oia is truly charming! No wonder they named Santorini "The Jewel of the Aegean Sea". From this vantage point, it was like being on the top of the world, looking down on magical layers of clouds, mountains and sea. I fell instantly in love with this view!Time
This was taken in the afternoon, at about 1.30pm.Lighting
The sun was no longer overhead, which is a plus, and the cloud cover was perfect.I used the natural light, which was what I was aiming for. No flash was needed. The mistiness of the clouds in the distance provided the best contrast to the clear white and blue of the foreground.Equipment
I used my Panasonic DMC-FZ40 camera and shot this with a focal number of f/5.6. No tripod used, as the lack of space makes it quite impossible to use a tripod here.Inspiration
This was just too beautiful to miss. The different hues of blue portrayed the serenity that I was feeling, perched up there looking out into the wide blue yonder. The iconic dark blue domes of the churches provided the accent needed, as a pop of colour against that mysteriousness of the misty mountains and sea of blue. Also, I was thrilled that there was the glimmer of light on the water surface, as well as the sunlight breaking through the clouds! What more could I ask for!Editing
A minimum use of post processing was needed. I merely saturated the colour up a notch to get that specific blue of the domes to stand out.In my camera bag
As I like to travel light, I have 2 cameras in my bag. My Panasonic DMC-FZ40, and my OlympusPen Lite E-PL7Feedback
In a place like Santorini, look out for the colours of the sea and sky in the bright daylight. Capture in your photos that cobalt blue and ultramarine of the Mediterranean which artists like Van Gogh and Renoir captured in oil. I would also go with the flow, and not get too flustered that the architecture be represented in your photos as perfectly straight as there is no such perfection in the architecture of Santorini. Let your photos find their own lines, be flexible.Just feel the pleasure that the beauty and uniqueness of Santorini offers you, the photogapher.
