I took this picture walking in Chicago. Because there's so much violence going on in Chicago and it continues, this picture made me stop and think about all the "Young" people that have lost their lives due to gun violence.

Behind The Lens

Location

This was photographed in Chicago in front of a church. I was walking around in the neighborhood shooting to improve my photography skills and I came upon this image. I thought it would be a great shot because this photograph emits a strong message: Enough is Enough!

Time

The photograph that was taken made me feel sad, angry and afraid. It was a nice sunny breezy day, maybe in the 80's. It was taken on July 9, 2011 around 7 pm. I took a couple of shots in different positions. I did this because I was literally shaking in disbelief and wanted to make sure I got a good shot. I was disturbed and nervous. Once I got a good grip of my camera and my feelings, I got closer for a better shot. I realized one shirt after another positioned across the lawn on some type of pole. I thought is was astonishing. There were so many t-shirts and they all belonged to young children.

Lighting

I wanted to make sure the colors and the t-shirts could be seen. The lighting made a feeling of sadness and grief in my heart when I looked at it again at home. I like the natural background lightning in this photograph because it adds meaning and feelings to the photograph.

Equipment

This photograph was taken with a Canon 7D with a 28-135mm f/16 lens.

Inspiration

I've lived in Chicago all my life and to hear on the news we've just lost another child to gun - violence inspired me to take this photograph. I haven't seen anything like this before. I took this photograph in the front yard of a church. It sent a message to the world that our children are dying everyday of gun violence. This photo shows a sample of how many have died.

Editing

I did not do any post-processing except cropping the photo a bit. This photograph speaks for itself, so little or no post-processing was done.

In my camera bag

I've learned to carry only what I need, especially when your walking around. If I know I'm out walking taking photo shots, I try to plan accordingly. I carry my tripod, 50mm, EF 24-105mm F/4L IS USM, flash and filters. I just recently learned you should always carry spare batteries as well.

Feedback

I arrived home to download my pictures as I eagerly awaited to see them processed on my computer. I was happy I took alot of shots. This gave me the opportunity to not only study my photos but to study my settings as well. If I was to take this same shot again, I would know how to make it better. I would advise others to take as many shots as you can. You never can take too many pictures.
