It is a marvelous shot. Excellent lighting and beautiful pose, nicely composed. I feel, if only a little bit eye-light is there it would have been still better. If my judgement is wrong, it may be ignored.

Location
This image was captured in my apartment ...ahh... in my professional "studio" ;-)Time
This shoot ended up taking a few hours in the middle of the night.Lighting
You can easily get carried away with studio lighting. I always like to experiment with light and other gear, but just as much, I like to experiment with the least amount of lighting/gear. This practice forces me to become creative at solving problems and dial in what I really want to focus on with the model.Equipment
Shot on a Canon 7D with a 70-200mm f/2.8 Used a single 200W studio strobe with a medium beauty-dish outfitted with a 20º gridInspiration
The style was predetermined previously to be a "film noir" mid-century style and was intended to remain in color. I still wanted it to retain that black & white feel to it... so the outfit was chosen to be black, skin tones to be creamy and smooth and having the red lipstick be the pop was carefully considered prior to the shoot.Editing
Most of the post production time was spent on skin tones and blemishes. All the lighting and highlights/shadows was accomplished in-camera (with a lot of trial & error test shots... as well as tiny tweaks to the lighting until we got it perfect). In my camera bag
I normally carry 2 Canon 7D bodies Canon 35mm f/1.4 Canon 16-35mm f/2.8 Canon 70-200mm f/2.8 A set of Canon speedlights & wireless triggersFeedback
Sometimes less is more. I encourage everyone to experiment with minimal lighting and to limit the amount of gear to really push the boundaries of what you can achieve without expensive gear. It will force you to get creative and in turn, create beautiful images.
