Absolutely Brilliant Setting and Capture. I'd love to be transported there - to absorb the moment and the near silence that seems to be mandatory in such extreme low temperatures.

Very nice, congrats!
I see this photo has been published in tons of magazines and won tons of awards around the world. Obviously its well deserving and now you can add this win to your list of awards. Congrats on that! I think at this point I'm giving up, my work isn't bad but I could never compete with great professionals such as yourself. I would love if VB would interview you so that some of us could know if you are self taught or were trained in an educational institution. I'm not even sure if my equipment is equipped for these types of harsh temps, not that I could ever afford to travel to such a beautiful place. No doubt you are blessed and great at what you do.

Location
The photo was taken in finish Lapland in the wonderful Region Kiilopää. I stayed there for a week in a small hut. I went every day with my snowshoes on a hike in the Fjell Kiilopää.Time
On the fifth day of my stay there was the right light for fantastic shots. The scene was breathtaking, I photographed in a frenzy. I did not notice the effort of long snowshoe hike and of the minus 38 degrees that day. I shot the image at the 04.01.2010. In this time of the year there are only a few hours of light. The sunrise is fluid in the sunset, so I could enjoy about 2 hours of this fantastic light in the atmosphere. This picture I shot at 12.00 p.m..Lighting
The light that day was stunning. I have visited Finnish Lapland since that time several times, but I had never again such a fascinating long-lasting light mood as on this day. My goal was to capture the mood of light as authentic as possible. I checked more frequently and exactly the image on the display of my camera to make sure I could capture this amazing day optimally on the memory card. I thought the hole day, nobody will believe the colors on the photo, everybody will say, that is a result of photoshop.Equipment
This was shot on a Canon 40D, with a 10-22mm lens. No other equipment was involved.Inspiration
It required no great inspiration in this fascinating unspoilt, peaceful and quiet winter scenery. Each would have held a camera in hand, would have photographed that day to take a piece of this fairy tale world with home.Editing
I made shots with different exposures and these joined later manuel. This gave me the opportunity to hold the dynamic range of the human eye can perceive on the image. I did not have the opportunity to carry a tripod, because of the long walks with snowshoes and poles, So I had to concentrate on holding the camera still in this extreme cold to obtain stable images. In my camera bag
I have a canon EOS 5D Mark III in my bag. A canon 16-35mm lens. My Canon 100-400mm lens, it gives me the opportunity to take a 400mm lens with moderate weight with me. In most cases I put also the canon 24-105mm in my bag. If I expect aurora I put the Canon 14mm into the backpack. In addition, I drag things around the Lee filter system with various filters with me.Feedback
In my view, the tours at very high snow and extreme cold (I had on my trips up to 46 degrees minus) should b e well prepared. Snowshoes are constantly to be able to move in very deep snow. Also, you should always keep in mind the way back, as it is only a short time up there is light, the weather can swing out at any time and the cold takes a lot of energy. To get lost in these weather conditions can have unpleasant consequences. A lens should be changed as soon as possible. At the end of the tour you should if possible keep the equipment in the camera bag or even better in a plastic bag, until it has adapted to the room temperature. This prevents condensation from entering the equipment.
