The jaguar photo was taken on February 23, 2014 at the Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha Nebraska.Time
Our Troop stayed in the zoo all night for a scout campout. After our early morning tour we went back to the Cat House about 9:55 am. We were fortunate enough that the keepers had just provided bones to the cats.Lighting
There were some sky lights in the building. The light was generally defused because the morning was a bit cloudy.Equipment
This was taken with a Canon Rebel T3. Because the picture was taken through glass, the flash was disabled. I used a canon lens (75-300). I like this lens because it is small enough for me to easily handle without a tripod.Inspiration
The jaguar was perched on a platform. I spent several minutes taking shot after shot to capture how he would work his teeth on the bone.Editing
Just some minor editing to eliminate the background noiseIn my camera bag
depending on what I tend to shoot I usually keep the telephoto 75-300mm in my bag ad the standard 28-135mm. If I plan on shooting buildings I bring the 10-24mm tamron. I also keep chapstick and lens cleanersFeedback
Go to the zoo early when there are as few people around as possible. The earlier in the day, I find more of the animals are active and starting their routines. Be patient. Hang around each the enclosures before moving to the next. Taking your time with each animal lets you see some of their personality. Don't be afraid to shoot thru glass. zoom in on your subject and the glass imperfections tend to slide away.
