Location
This was taken in my home studio in Ramat Gan in israel , when you shot high speed pictures you need darkness and the best time to do so is after the sun goes down..Time
This shot was taken one late night with my wife helping me out after all else failed , i was stuck i had to find something new to add to my water pictures. trying to control something erratic as water is prety hard especially at that time of night after a few hours where every shot did not come out as i wanted it to So i had to think outside the box and use the water from another angle, and then this magic shot came to lifeLighting
Well lighting in high speed photography is always tricky, since when you shoot this kind of pictures you use to flash not just for lighting but also to freeze the action , so i need to use a three speedlights on manual mode at 1/32 in order to freeze it and 1/32 it is a very fast burst of light however.. not as strong so the lighting has to be fairly close to the water drops. one flash from the top bouncing of the white background and to more in the front at a 45 degree angle aiming at the drop of waterEquipment
I used a Canon 5D mark II for this shot with a 70-200 f/2.8 IS lens mounted on kenko extension tubes, a lot of people dis the extension tubes but i love them cause if you use a good lens with them then you get the same optics as your lens since the extensions tube has no glass in them . I also used an old velbon tripod that i have the needs an upgrade but still does its work (:Inspiration
What inspires me on all of my high speed water photos it the fact that this kind of thing happens all the time , we are just to busy with our daily lives so we don't notice it . It happens when you pore a glass of water , when you take a shower and basically every time some sort of liquid is running. So i wanted to remind people to stop for a sec in this rat race and appreciate the small things in life that we take for grantedEditing
I dont do that much post processing since i like to get all my colors and lighting on set, but i do shoot on raw and what i do is play with contrast a bit and with the clarity . Besides that it will use selective color to adjust for the right colors , sharpen a bit and use noise reductionIn my camera bag
What i will usually have for this kind of set is first of my trusted the Canon 70-200 2.8 IS with extension tubes or my 100 2.8 macro (but i like to 70-200 better ) and my 5D MARK II. i will also have 3-5 flashes that i can set on manual and radio slave to go along with them . A tripod is a must! invest in a good one it will last for years . also some food dye is in order to give the water its color there are many machine out in the market to help you control the drip so look around and see whats best for you , i started out with a nylon bag that i poked a hole in it and let it drip so experiment before you investFeedback
PATIENCE ! AND LOTS OF IT .. you need to understand that water is erratic and can be controlled to a certain degree , so you can have a set ready you did your test shoot , and they look good , then you add the color and all goes wrong and its back to square one . So if you want to do it go and read , about high speed photography about water and about its viscosity and any thing that think can help you step up your game in high speed photography . Good luck and of course you can always ask my questions in the comments ill do my best to help you i have no secrets it just technique and ill close with on of my favorite quotes from on of the fathers of photography ,henri cartier-bresson:"It is an illusion that photos are made with the camera… they are made with the eye, heart and head."
