Behind The Lens

Location

Simpson Park in Valley Park, Missouri, suburb of St Louis.

Time

This was early summer, just past 6 pm. The Golden hour.

Lighting

Any chance of using natural light diffused by the setting or rising sun, especially with a water feature, is hard to go wrong with, landscape, macro, time lapse, portraits, it's flattering and creates gorgeous images.

Equipment

At the time this photo was taken, over 2 years ago, I had just gotten a nikon d3100 with a kit lens for Christmas that year. Lens 18-55 mm, 3.5 aperture.

Inspiration

It was my youngest daughters 2nd birthday. Hours of taking shots of kids playing on monkey bars, I wanted a subject that didn't move. And I didn't know when I'd get another chance to be at that lake at the perfect time again.

Editing

This was hdr, processed in Photomatix and touched up in Adobe photoshop. I love hdr and focus stacking, both can require a lot of time to produce exactly what you have in mind. There's a fine line between pop and over saturated. In the 2 years since this photo my ability and style has changed quite a bit.

In my camera bag

I have an olympus om d em 10 mark II with the 14-42 mm kit lens and 50-140 kit, nikon d3100, 50 mm nikkor prime, 70-300 Sigma zoom, and the kit lens. Full cokin p set of square filters, ND 2-19, graduated ND and graduated one stop color filters, polarizer, tiffin and Hoyas, and a variable ND and gnd. Nikon flash, led lights and a range of flashlights.

Feedback

Install a weather app. Plan ahead if possible and always keep basic gear with you. Some of my favorite photos were taken because I accidentally saw a photo opportunity.
