Location
This photo was taken at the Potawatomi Zoo, in South Bend, Indiana, USA.Time
This was taken in the afternoon, at about 4 pm. It was before Golden Hour, but due to the location of the exhibit, the time of day did not create too harsh of light.Lighting
The placement of the exhibit on the grounds of the zoo allowed for enough diffusion of the light to give it a rich golden sunlight throughout the picture. Even though this was not at golden hour, it still has a similar effect.Equipment
This was shot on a very basic setup. I used a Canon Rebel T3 with a 70-200 zoom lens. I was shooting at a distance of about 50-100 ft. using a tripod. This was outdoors, so no artificial lighting was used.Inspiration
The zoo had held a contest for an upcoming calendar. Twelve categories were required, and winners of each category would be featured as the calendar photo for that month.Editing
I used Lightroom to touch up the photo slightly. This picture did not require very much adjustment. I used an adjustment brush to lighten the subject, increased the contrast just a touch, and increased the vivid/saturation settings very slightly to make the colors really pop. Amazingly, the cage of the enclosure did not show up in post processing, so no cloning or healing brushes were needed. In my camera bag
I still use the same camera today, although I plan to upgrade soon. I am a photographer for a hobby, not as my source of income so I had taken a long hiatus and recently started back up again. Now, I usually carry the 70-200 and a 50mm prime lens, and a simple speed light with remote trigger. I also carry a fold-up reflector/diffuser to help with lighting.Feedback
Be patient. This shot took several hours to get right. But the end result is worth the wait!
