Behind The Lens

Location

I actually took this photo right outside my childhood home in Wheatland, North Dakota. The lighting was perfect for a spontaneous photo session.

Time

I took this photo during golden hour; North Dakota sunsets are one of the state's best features!

Lighting

I wanted the subject to be backlit but not sillouhetted so I angled her slightly towards the sun, enabling the light to hit the side of her face. I love how the sunlight shows up in her hair but her face is still evenly lit.

Equipment

I used my Nikon D5000 for this shot.

Inspiration

Being back in my home state inspired me to take this photo. The sunsets and prairie landscapes come together there to create some pretty magical photo opportunities!

Editing

I used Lightroom to adjust the exposure, contrast, and color balance to bring out the warmth.

In my camera bag

I always have my Nikon D610, and it's usually sporting either my Sigma Art 35mm f1.4 or my Tamron 24-70 f1.8. I also carry a Sigma 105mm f2.8 and my Nikon SB-900 speedlight.

Feedback

My advice is to look for beauty in ordinary places! If you notice that the light looks amazing, get outside and photograph something or someone, and experiment with different angles and ideas until something clicks (pun intended)!
