Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken from the Biloxi, MS fishing pier in the Biloxi bay near the Biloxi / Ocean Springs bridge on the Gulf Coast of Mississippi.

Time

Taken at approximately 5:30 in the morning just minutes before sunrise.

Lighting

The lighting was natural light just before the sun breaks the horizon in the morning.

Equipment

I used a Canon 7D with the Canon 28-135 lens on a tripod.

Inspiration

As I was watching the shrimp boats leave for the gulf just before the sunrise, I heard in the distance a train coming toward the swing bridge that was directly behind me. One of my mentors for years has told me to never ignore my back when out shooting that sometimes the best shot is behind you. As I turned around directly behind me was the bridge. I quickly moved my gear to the other side of the pier set it up and waited for the train to enter the bridge. I new I only had one chance to get the shot I wanted, I waited for the train and hit the remote for a couple of seconds trying to center the light trails of the train in the bridge. It was a one shot chance. I was ecstatic when I downloaded my shots for the morning. This one time the rule of thirds was out the door, dead center in every way.

Editing

I did a little of post processing but not much, I just enhanced the contrast and color saturation just a tad.

In my camera bag

Currently I am really into landscape / cityscape / seascape photos so my go to lens is the Canon 28-135, I am saving for an upgrade to the Canon 24-70 f2.8. I also have a Canon 100-400 L, and a Canon 10-18.

Feedback

Being in the right spot at the right time sometimes is not by chance. I study the Sun, what time it is rising and setting as well as where the shadows are and will be. Before I shoot a sunrise I scope out the location during the normal light and use the app TPE every time. Every time I shoot, I turn around every few minutes to see if anything is happening behind me, sometimes the best drama and light is right behind you. I have a open mind when I go to shoot and venture out so that I do not just shoot the scene that was planned. Some of my best shots have come from this philosophy.
