I love this little bird. Owls are so sweet. I would love to have one as a pet, but that would be mean to keep one of them in a cage.

Thank you all. It was an interesting face to face meeting with this guy in my backyard.

Location
As I distributed feed and water to the inhabitants of our small bird-raising operation, this owl presented itself for a photo shoot INSIDE one of our pheasant flight pens. Of course, I sat down the feed bucket and grabbed my camera from the house!Time
I had procrastinated that day, so it was late afternoon before I went outside to do chores. I wish I could say I planned this out, but it was pure serendipity.Lighting
I was lucky--the lighting was fairly even--some clouds, no harsh sunlight. When I am blessed with this kind of opportunity, I accept whatever light God sends with it.Equipment
My Nikon D4 had the Sigma 2.8 70-200mm lens attached and was sitting near the door, so that is what went to the pen with me. I wish I had taken time to check all my settings, but I was so very excited. The camera was set to aperature priority (2.8) which was okay, but the ISO had been set for an indoor wedding the night before.Inspiration
I very much enjoy the outdoors and am thrilled when beauty presents itself--right in my path! We call these opportunities "blessings beside the road"--sometimes the road is my driveway, or the path to the animal pens or the road to my 'paying job'.Editing
This sweetie sat in decent light--all I did was crop the image to make my eyes and heart happy. In my camera bag
I always have my Sigma 2.8 79-200mm, my 2.8 35-70mm and the D4. My D700 weighs much less, but the low light capability of the D4 is awesome!Feedback
Safety precautions--I didn't realize the size of the owl's legs and talons until I was inside the pen with him. And yes, that beak is used to tear the flesh from small animals--safety precautions when entering a confined space.
