Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken at my house in a little area I set up as a "studio". All it required was black sheets, a table, and lights.

Time

This shot was taken at night so I was able to get the background as dark as possible.

Lighting

Lighting was tricky for this one because I had no real professional equipment. I used a normal desk light to light up the foreground and then used Christmas lights in the background to get a nice bokeh affect.

Equipment

I used my Nikon D3100 with a 50mm f1.8 lens. At the time I had no tripod so I had to rig my camera on a chair using duct tape.

Inspiration

I was just trying to find a creative way to incorporate bokeh into a photograph. I

Editing

Nope

In my camera bag

I am a minimalist. So I tend to carry around only the essentials. My Nikon 50mm lens is always attached to my D3100. It is an extremely versatile lens and I use it for a lot. My next lens would be the standard 18-55mm. It is perfect for the landscapes and some Astrophotography.

Feedback

You don't need a $5000 dollar full frame DSLR with a sturdy tripod and full studio. All this shot requires is some creativity and patience. Try and get a background that is as dark as possible. Could be a sheet, towel, or blanket. Anything really. Then set up your lights around 10 feet away. If it's too close the bokeh wouldn't be as good. Make sure to light up the foreground instead of using a direct flash. An external flash on the side would be just fine, but it is completely not necessary. As for the camera settings, the most important part is to make sure to get your aperture as open as possible. Anything around f1-3 would do just fine. The other settings are completely dependent on the each different lighting situation.
