Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken in the Tulip festival of Holland, Michigan. I am a self taught photographer and this was one of my initial favourite photos.

Time

I remember travelling almost overnight to be right on time when the garden opens so that I could avoid the crowds. Taken around 8 am on a crisp spring morning.

Lighting

The light was diffused already by the cloud cover over the city and helping in evenly spreading it over the flower. While I would have liked a sunny feel as well, I feel the mood with the diffused light is also great.

Equipment

This was shot using my Nikon D7000 and a 50 mm 1.8g prime lens. Love the bokeh effect on this picture this lens gave me.

Inspiration

I wanted to shoot a row of flowers as a quietly fading away from the camera. But I saw one of the flowers stand out tall amongst the crowd. At that time I knew it was the chosen one.

Editing

I didn’t do much post processing here because I was able to get most of it straight out of the camera. I did some colour correction to make it a little crisp.

In my camera bag

I normally have my 35 mm 1.8 lens always attached to my D7000 camera. I also have a 50 mm 1.8 lens for any portrait chances that could appear. I do take my much heavier Tamron 150-600 out when I go for wildlife and bird photography.

Feedback

This is a very easy shot if you have the right equipment. There could be difference in the type of flower you could find in your neighbourhood. Early spring mornings are best for capturing a fresh flower. Lighting is the key in such photos. Try to take the photo with a wide open aperture and the bokeh should stand out.
