Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at a rodeo in Augusta, Montana.

Time

This was taken around 10am, when the cowboys were getting ready for the rodeo. This boy was practicing lassoing while his dad was getting ready.

Lighting

It was a sunny day, but it was early morning so the light wasn't too bright at the time.

Equipment

I used a Nikon D7000, and a 70-200 lens.

Inspiration

I thought he was cute practicing dressed like that. I wanted to get one of him not paying attention, but he looked up right when I took it. I think it made this turn out perfect. It wasn't posed, and I think that can be seen.

Editing

The only post I did was lightening the shadows on his face because of his hat.

In my camera bag

I now carry a Nikon D750. I prefer prime lenses, so I have a 50mm and an 85mm. I also have a zoom lens.

Feedback

Always be ready to capture moments of people. You never know when a perfect expression, or when their gestures will be perfect for a photo. Learn how to read people and anticipate situations, especially if you're wanting natural, unposed photos.
