Location
I am from Bangladesh. This photo was taken in my living room in Dhaka. I made the background with my black goergette scarf. The model in this photo is one of my close friends, Mim.Time
I was new at photography. My friend, Mim one day came to my house and requested me to capture some portrait of her's. So, I started experimenting with lights and colors to give a good portrait. It was almost evening when I found the perfect light to make her look mysterious and beautiful at the same time.Lighting
Mim is always enigmatic about herself. So, I wanted to capture her mysterious personality in this portrait. When it was almost evening a feeble light was coming through window. It was perfect for making any photo mysterious. Quickly I made the background with black scarf which went well with her red scarf in dim window light.Equipment
This was shot on Nikon D5100 with 18-105 mm, f/3.5-5.6 lens. A tripod was used as the photo was shot in 1/6 s shutter speed. No other equipment was used.Inspiration
I wanted to bring out her personality in a photo. Her character is perplexing. She likes to keep things to herself. Her smile is intriguing. She wears that red scarf most often. Besides she is a very religious person. Even though she had to struggle a lot in life, she always stood strong. She believes in God and smiled at every problems she faced. I wanted all that into one portrait. That half bright, half dark light and her inexplicable smile perfectly captured her story.Editing
When the photo was taken, I wasn't that much good at post-processing. To me, the light, color and exposure was perfect. So, it needed no post-processing.In my camera bag
I always have my Nikon D5100 body and 50 mm f/1.8 prime lens with me. I also have my 18-105 mm kit lens in my bag for street photography. For street photography I also use Samsung Galaxy S6 mobile with 16 MP, f/1.9, 28 mm primary camera. It is easier to capture decisive moments or sudden interesting moments with cell phone camera. I use my 50 mm lens for capturing portraits.Feedback
I only used window light here and nothing else. No reflector, no flash, no external light. But if you want to capture something similar, you can use a reflector from the other side of the window light. It is better to experiment with light which one will bring out the model's personality. Light plays a huge role in bringing out one's personality. Some characteristics come well with bounce flash, some with full natural morning light, some with red sunset light. You have to choose color carefully such that color doesn't overpower one's personality. Hope this helps. Happy clicking.
