Kill Bill! I love that movie. Never made the correlation but thanks for the compliment. :)

Location
This photograph was taken in Upstate New York in my parents backyard.Time
I shot this image sometime between 12-4pm. I needed the light but the time of day didn't quite matter so much since it was overcast.Lighting
Overcast light is a kind of blank canvas. I love to shoot images in overcast natural light and then go back in with Photoshop and highlight certain parts on my own.Equipment
I own a digital Canon 5D Mark II with a Canon 16-35mm f/2.8 L Series Lens. I had my camera set on a tripod and used a remote control to trigger the shutter.Inspiration
This image is a part of my series called, Another Me. In the series, I depict Korean Folktales told through self-portraiture as a way for me to reconnect with my Korean heritage. Prior to this series, I choose to ignore the fact that I am a Korean adoptee and that I did come from a seemingly foreign country and place. Another Me was a way for me to explore and investigate that heritage through photography and storytelling -two things that I love doing! Specifically, this last image represents a story about a boy that holds on to terrible and begrudging spirits. He ties them up in a bag and refuses to let them go. Eventually, the spirit break free of their captivity and are let out into the world, much like the Greek Myth of Pandora's Box. The story truly represented my personal feelings of hate, regret, anger, and shame that I used to connect with my adoption. I choose to represent those feelings as heavy black stones. Like the ending in the story, I recreated the moment where those negative feelings are finally set free but with myself letting them go. I created a visual symbol where I decided to give up my negative feelings and truly accept who and what I am.Editing
Yes! I love to manipulate my images in post. In this case, I wanted a whimsical feeling with the narrative by having the stones fly away rather than falling down, which is too realistic and obvious. I shot the stones separately and later added them in. I added snow to the scene to create more drama and I enlarged the bag slightly to show the visual weight better. Everything else, (myself included), where shot on scene. In my camera bag
I always have a remote shutter on hand for self-portraits and I love my Canon 16-35mm f/2.8 L series lens because the images created give such a wonderful sense of environment. Often I carry a notebook too for spontaneous thoughts.Feedback
Have a game plan and don't be afraid to change it once on location. Many little and wonderful things can help elevate your image if you can let go of any mental barriers and give into spontaneity.
