Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken in my hometown. At an abandoned railway, which now serves as a storage for old trains. I was planning take a walk to the old railway, and one weekend friend and I decided to take a cameras and take pictures of that abandoned place.

Time

Most likely, sometimes after lunch. Around 2h PM. The old railway is a few kilometers from the city center, it was a typical autumn day, the rain could begin to fall at any moment. I was therefore a little bit under pressure because I a few weeks ago a lost rainy cover for my photographic bag. We were in a hurry to stay ahead of the rain, so I forgot the tripod.

Lighting

New rail passes along this old railway and every time when I was riding in the train I watched the train depot, and I think which time of day would be best to show this abandonment areas. I have concluded that I need "chaotic" morning, "chaotic" sunrise. But this morning was raining heavily until 12h AM. Cloudy remained what enabled me soft and diffuse lighting, and low clouds have enabled desired chaotic scene.

Equipment

I use my loyal Nikon D90 with AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR lens

Inspiration

I work in another city and travel by train twice a day, so I passing by the the old abandoned railways, I watched it for a long time and i wanted to take pictures, because it was extremely interesting to me. I still observing the area and there are plenty materials for taking photos, so definitely I planning to go back.

Editing

In camera RAW I was adjust: contrast, sharpness, details in the shadows, exposure, expressed black, brightness and that's it.

In my camera bag

In the bag is: Nikon D90 and lenses Nikkor 18 - 100m, Nikkor 50mm 1.8. Filters: close-up +4, polarization filter, ND 4-400, graduation ND. I like to traveling light, so I do not carry a lot of equipment, I often leave Gitzo tripod at home or in the car because I decide that I will not need it. Sometimes in the bag I have Yongnuo YN-568EX Speedlite Flash and Timer Remote Shutter.

Feedback

For me it is important to know the area and what is there to expect, not very pleasant if you chased by local guy with a rifle or threatened with the police. Gather information what you can, and  what  you can not in the  area of interest. Studying and monitoring the weather forecast.
