Location
This was taken in an inlet near New Bern, NC. I believe it was a private docking area but my Father in law used to work on a shrimp boat and had some friends still working there.Time
I don't remember the exact time it was taken but it was definitely before noon on an overcast day. It was taken less than a year ago after the hurricane passed through.Lighting
It was an overcast day which helped to smooth out the highlights in the sky and give some very mild and soft lighting.Equipment
I used a Nikon D7000, AF-S Nikkor 18-140/3.5 and a tripod. A tripod is an absolute must to do a shot like this. If you don't already have one, it should definitely be your next investment. I also have a 50mm/1.8 and am AF-S Nikkor 55-300/4.5.Inspiration
We were visiting my wife's parents in New Bern, NC and my Father in-law used to work on a shrimp boat when he was younger. I love the ocean, maritime art and photography so I asked him if he knew some spots where we could get some good shots. He took me down all along the coastline and this is one of the images I ended up with. It was actually docked being repaired at the time I took this shot.Editing
I do my post processing in Photomatix and then again in Adobe Photoshop RAW and then in Photoshop. I do a three bracket photo. The reasoning for this is that I don't see much of a benefit to doing more than three, it frees up memory and with only three photos there's less of a chance to have camera shake. Although I try to have my tripod on me at all times, sometimes it doesn't work out that way.In my camera bag
I try to always carry my Nikon D7000, since its when you dont have your camera on hand, when you tend to need it the most. Its a great camera and very robust. It is weather sealed and very comfortable to carry around. It also has two card slots which is great. I always keep a card in there in case I go to grab my camera and forget to put a second card in. It has saved me more than once. I also tend to carry the same AS-F Nikkor 18-140/3.5. It has a very wide range and still a relatively fast lens. Depending on the bag I bring if Ive got room Ill grab my 55-300/4.5 and then the 50mm/1.8 prime if I still have room. I try to always bring my full size tripod but I also have a smaller one that extends to close to 3ft which I will carry everywhere I go just in case I end up needing itFeedback
I highly recommend learning HDR and how to bracket photos. Then I suggest submitting them to forums or view bug so that you can get some feed back. When you do your own HDR its very easy to get carried away and take it too far. By listening to your peers and fans you can get a better understanding of what might be too much. I also used a little dodge and burn to get the exact contrast I wanted and darken the shadows back a bit.
