Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken at Taronga Zoo Sydney.

Time

It was taken about noon, it was a really hot day so the Tigers were sheltering from the sun and looked very relaxed and harmless

Lighting

The tigers are taken a nap in the shade and you can see the sunlight beaming down through the gaps in the trees to give the viewer an idea of the hot day they're trying to avoid.

Equipment

This was shot on a Canon 550d using an 18-55mm lens, handheld, it was the only lens I had at the time because I'd only got the camera a short time before this shot. Nothing else was used.

Inspiration

I'd done my research on the zoo before going there so I had in mind certain animals I definitely wanted to photograph. I wanted to get a shot of the Tigers either showing their power or their mellow side as this shot shows. They were sheltering from the sun and the Tigers outside weren't up to much. I love this shot because they look so relaxed and chilled out.

Editing

In Photoshop I brightened the exposure and enhanced the colours to warm the shot up and give it more light because it was shot it the shade.

In my camera bag

I still use my Canon 550d and I've added to my kit lens. I now have a 50mm 1.8, a 55-250mm zoom and a 10-18mm wide angle lens. I also carry a polariser and a filter kit, spare batteries and memory cards. I'm slowly growing my camera kit.

Feedback

Good preparation and timing, having an idea of what the subject will be doing at the time you'll be there to take your shot, also an open mind and a backup plan incase they're not doing what you expected. And patience is always good because you could be waiting a long time for them to do something for a good photo.
