Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at a beautiful 10,000 acre horse ranch where they can run wild with their owners.

Time

We set the shoot up for 9:00 am so we could have plenty of time for him to run and play and I choose to take candid photos as I find they can be your best photographs. This is by far one of my favorites as it shows the love between a girl and her horse.

Lighting

I took advantage of only using the natural light of a beautiful day.

Equipment

I am a Nikon girl, I used my Nikon D750 and my 24-70 2.8 lens. As the lighting around the light was perfect, I did not use a tripod or flash for this shot.

Inspiration

This young lady is graduating and leaving for college, it was so emotional for her to realize she would be leaving her horse behind, so I recommended we do her senior pictures with the one special animal in her life. This picture represents the final goodbye kiss until she comes back home.

Editing

This photo did not require a lot of post-processing, I did turn it black & white in Photoshop as I felt it made a define statement and allows the focus to be on the subject.

In my camera bag

I keep 2 cameras at all times, my Nikon D750 and a secondary Nikon D610. I always have my go to lens which is my Nikkor 24-70 2.8 aND my Sigma 70-200 2.8. These 2 lens alone can get me any day, I love using both of them for portraits. I also keep a Nikon sb700 flash, extra batteries and a tripod at all times. You just never know when a special moment is right around the corner, and I want to be ready.

Feedback

The best advise I could give someone wanting to capture moments like this is to be patient, don't rush your subject and allow them time to just be them self in a very natural setting. As a photographer, we all have our idea of a pose or a setting, but I truely believe that getting to know about your client ahead of time, their hobbies , places they love to go, you will capture a much more relaxed, free feeling natural photograph that everyone will love.
