A cracking sample, well captured. A very close second in my challenge from me. Good luck in future challenges.

Behind The Lens

Location

This image was taken in my home studio in Kerrville, Texas where I photograph a wide range of calcite and other minerals in my personal mineral collection.

Time

This shot was taken early evening using the black background.

Lighting

To create the "golden glow" this image was back lit with natural light from a west facing window and a reduced flash at a 45 degree angle from the mineral specimen. I use a black background of flexible poster board against a frame that holds it in place at the desired angle to create the seamless background.

Equipment

For this shot I used my Fujifilm Finepix HS 20 with on camera flash and a tabletop tripod.

Inspiration

I make an effort to photograph and document all specimens in my extensive mineral collect to show the natural and unique beauty of Earth's underground flowers. Beautiful minerals are true objects of art and presenting them as such through photography brings great pleasure and enduring delight.

Editing

The only post processing wasto clean up the black background by removing several distracting dust spots.

In my camera bag

I use the Finepix a lot for this type of mineral photography. I always carry my Sony 850a and a group of 4 lenses plus extension tubes and a 2 times converter for field shoots. For these in house shots i like the quick, easy results I get from my Fujifilm Finepix.

Feedback

For good results, try a variety of exposures, depth of field and different lighting setups. Shoot until you see an image you like and then do two more the same for good measure.
