Behind The Lens

Location

The image was shot in Rome from the balcony of my holiday apartment. I was interested in the different street POV and the shapes and angles on rooftop of the trams are also interesting.

Time

This was shot in the morning before most the shopfront shutters came up and before shoppers started arriving. The area is about fairly close to the Termani station, Rome's main railway station. On the other side of the road is the oldest gelati shop in Italy, which is difficult to walk past without visiting.

Lighting

No special lighting used, just the natural daylight at hat time of day.

Equipment

At that time I was using a Canon 400D with an EF 24-70 lens, I have since upgraded to a Canon 70D after my 400D finally died after 4 years of faithful service and thousands of shots. I also use my iPhone 5s, nearly as much as Canon. I traded up, via insurance, to the 5s after having my previous iPhone 4s stolen in Paris!

Inspiration

After taking many street shots of this interesting city, I was interested in the birds eye view and the different aspect of a typical Roman city street.

Editing

There is virtually no post processing here, which is unusual for me as I like to think of the photograph in the camera as part of the process creating an image rather than a photograph. I often shoot HDR and process with Photoshop CS6 on a MacBook Pro.

In my camera bag

My normal equipment in the bag are Canon 70D, EF 24-70 2.8L, 70-200 f/4L and 100mm f/2.8L macro. I also have a pretty neat gadget called a Max Stone (A kickstarter project) which enables me to fire the shutter from my iPhone. I also recently purchased a Manfrotto tripod.

Feedback

When travelling, take a portable hard drive and back up all your photos from your camera and phone every day. Doing this allowed me to save all my iPhone photos and videos before my phone was stolen early one morning on the steps leading down to the Pont Neuf Metro in Paris. Leave the hard drive at your accommodation. At home I always have my iPhone ready and also nearly always have my 70D with the 24-70 lens attached in my car. Always experiment with different, interesting angles and be aware of composition which I think usually makes a good image.
