Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken in Patriarch Grove deep in the White Mountain, northern part of California. It was a great experience to shoot with the ancients and witness the beauty of the sky during the night.

Time

Me and my wife arrived in Bristlecone Pine forest around 11AM in the morning from Los Angeles and took the Discovery Trail to kill time while waiting for the nightfall. Around 3PM we decided to move forward to Patriach Grove so we can scout the area where to shoot while the sun still up. By the time we got there we walk around and enjoy the view sorrounded by ancient trees. we actually had time to relax and eat our dinner inside our car. The place is so cold and we decided to wait inside the car until 11PM. Around 11PM i started to shoot these ancient trees and this tree is one of my favorite because of its straight trunk with no leaves living a room for the background milkyway to be seen clearly.

Lighting

.One of the reason why this place is so great if you're looking to shoot milky way is that, its so far away from light pollution. In order for me to achieve this shot, there should be less light pollution and shoot not during full moon. In this photo, i used a flashlight to fill in lights to my foreground by brushing up and down on the tree giving more details on the tree and to avoid a silhuette look.

Equipment

For this shot, i used my canon 5d mark iii, canon 17-40mm, tripod and flashlight for my foreground.

Inspiration

A lot of astrophotographers showcase their milky way shots and one of them is Michael Shainblum. He is an amazing photographer with unique style.

Editing

Yes i did post-process this photo. To me, its always been a requirement to pp my photo before sharing it. So for this photo, i made an adjustment to the highlights, shadows and colors inside lightroom. I also applied noise reduction a bit. After those adjustments, i imported it to photoshop to do more detailed adjustments. In photoshop, i used dodge tool to brighten the milkyway slightly and burn tool to adjust the shadows from the tree. For sharpness, i used the sharpen tool to sharpen the tree details.

In my camera bag

Usually inside my bag is my camera, yeah seriously lol. Okay so here is my list. Camera 5d mark iii, 17-40mm(my fave lens that i currently have), 4 memory 32gb/each,4batt pack, tripod, gorillapod,nd filters, portable charger,2 mobile phones, flashlight, gatorade and swiss knife for survival ;) you never know.

Feedback

If you want to achieve something similar to this shot, you just need a camera that can go higher iso setting without loosing too much detail on the photo. Shooting the milky way is fun and definitely rewarding once you get it right on your shot. I got addicted to it and im guessing you guys will too.
