Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in Garda,Italy. It`s outside a wine shop.

Time

Taken at midday, the sun is overhead.

Lighting

With the sun directly overhead on a clear day the light is harsh and shadows hard. However the glancing light on vertical surfaces, like this building`s wall, does bring out textures.

Equipment

My `travel` camera at the time was a pocket able Fuji F11 6.3 mp compact. The final picture is about 40% of the original frame, so the file size is quite small. Despite being taken at full aperture [ f 2.8] the small sensor has recorded a good depth of field.

Inspiration

I guess the initial attraction was the bicycle, reminiscent of the old butcher`s delivery boys bike. I also liked the texture of the wall and the old wine cases. Later I learned that the Sassicaia 2003 wine that the box contained now sells for more than £150 per bottle!

Editing

Post processing was using Paint Shop Pro x4 with a touch of tone mapping to accentuate the texture. I also added a layer of Glow to give take the edge off the harsh light and add a little romance.

In my camera bag

My current travel camera is a Nikon P7100 compact [ now discontinued], otherwise it is a Nikon D7100 DSLR. My favorite lens is the 70-300 Nikkor zoom.

Feedback

The ideal composition often does not fit the ratio of the camera frame. Never be afraid to crop your images to get the best arrangement of the elements within the picture space.
