Behind The Lens

Location

I took this picture while visiting Hoover Dam. I was there for the Consumer Electronics Show - rented a car and drove out for the "hard hat" tour

Time

Early afternoon - harsh lighting, but it was winter, and the sun was lower than in the summer.

Lighting

I was going for an Ansel Adams gray scale. The light was pretty harsh/flat, but the mostly vertical walls still provided some dimensional detail

Equipment

I shot this using a Canon 50D with a 24-70mm F series lens, no tripod or flash.

Inspiration

I was going for an Ansel Adams gray scale. Upon crossing the dam, the shades became really evident. The clouds didn't hurt either

Editing

In order to get the gray scale, I added a red digital filter and then converted to black/white.

In my camera bag

I've since sold the 50D, and replaced it with a 5DMIII for backup and primarily shoot with a Canon 1-Dx. Really Right Stuff for tripods, and Think Tank for gear bags - including my roller. I have an array of Canon lenses as well.

Feedback

High f-stop, use an ND filter if you have one.
