Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at our annual cottage trip to Restoule Lake in Ontario, Canada. I had a fantastic view of the lake at sunset. As I was moving around to set up for a sunset shot I saw the boys fishing and they created a nice silhouette. I took a couple of shots at different setting. Had to hurry as the sun had already gone down and it was getting dark.

Time

It was in the evening during sunset

Lighting

The sunset created a nice glow in the sky and it also reflected on the calm lake. This is the best time to take photographs.

Equipment

I was using a Nikon D300 with a Nikon 70-200mm lens on a tripod

Inspiration

I was doing a lot of photography through our stay at the cottage and I captured this shot on the last evening of our stay. I was basically taking sunset shots, but with the boys fishing, the serenity of the scene seemed to be a good capture. The third element is the boy sitting on a bench watching the sunset, came later when I moved my angle and with him in the picture the story was complete.

Editing

yes I had to open a little the darker areas which was minimal and done in Lightroom

In my camera bag

Had a D300. Now own a D610 and lately a Lumix Panasonic G4 for mostly video. I also own the following lenses: Nikon 50 mm 1.8, Nikon 28-300mm, Nikon 70-200mm, Tokina 11-17mm have some polarizing filter and a neutral density filter Speedlights: SB600 and SB800 Vanguard tripod with the GH300T pistol grip All this goes in a Kata backpack 3in1 -33

Feedback

You have to have an open mind and try to capture what your eyes see and not to copy what others have already shot. Every different angle of the same scene can have a different effect. Try different settings as you never know what you will capture. During the good old film days we took a shot and knew the results only after 3 days and that was your final shot. Now it is so easy with digital and we can manipulate the image by post processing. My final advice is to have a passion for what you do.
