Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in a private yard in Hampshire County, West Virginia.

Time

I believe it was mid afternoon when I noticed the cat "Witchy Cat" was roaming the property. Witchy is an outside cat. She has eight acres to chase birds, mice and hide in the tall grass for a nap. Although she sometimes goes inside, normally she is very aloof and like many, a mysterious feline. I had brought my camera as this property is very beautiful with a stream fed pond and paths, fruit and pine trees. I hoped for but never thought I could catch her keeping still for a photo. Suddenly she sat down and I slowly approached her. I thought for sure she would take off but it seems she was actually posing for me. I got close enough for this photo and yes, she does have two different color eyes. Seconds after a took the photo she got up and wandered off.

Lighting

I did not have much time to snap this so I only used my "animal setting" on my camera. I knew she could take off any minute.

Equipment

I used a Panasonic Lumix, not a very expensive camera but it takes nice digitals. I did not use a flash, just stood a little ways away and zoomed her in. I have seen such wonderful work on this website, it's a pleasure just to view others peoples work. Myself I enjoy photos that are not changed a lot but just enhanced. Just my opinion and taste but adding a lot of artificial lighting and objects take away from the original scene. Nothing wrong with this everyone enjoys different types and styles of photography.

Inspiration

I love nature and the majority of my photo's are; landscapes, weather, animals, trees and flowers. After receiving many compliments from others I often get the statement, "I would not have even noticed that." I am just an amateur and truly enjoy photography. One can get so involved that hours just pass in a "flash." Still life photos is something I sometimes do as well. It can take quite a while before I see up the "perfect shot."

Editing

I do edit my photo's and use websites where I can change lightening, color, soften, change the glow and use a fading process. Of course I can also fix unto a spot I wish to change or eliminate all together. This can actually take hours to do until I am satisfied with the results. I love this process as well. Sometimes I will shoot something knowing that once I get to editing it, a truly great photo will emerge.

In my camera bag

Honestly it is just my camera. I don't have the funds to buy expensive equipment but my dream is to one day own a high quality Canon and then I would probably be lost outside for hours.

Feedback

Patience is something that is truly needed. This especially relates to animal and birds since they are not likely to want to pose for you. Keeping still and silent is something one has to master. This particular photo was just plain luck. You normally only get glimpses of "Witchy" as she quickly appears and disappears into her vast domain. Of course you also have to take numerous shots as the slightest turn of the head or body movement can completely change the whole essence of your photo.
