Location
My wife and I and a few friends went to SUNY New Paltz to watch the fireworks on July 4, 2013. We were sitting right below the bursts and I had a great vantage point for taking photos. I just pointed my camera up at the bursts and let it fire away. I actually surprised myself with this shot.Time
It must have been around 9:30PM, a perfectly clear, yet dark night. No clouds, no haze, and most importantly, very little moonlight. Which made it excellent to get shots of the starbursts.Lighting
The only lighting came from the fireworks themselves. Some of them were darker colors and some of them, like this one, were clear, crisp and bright. They lit everything up and I was able to get a good reading on them.Equipment
Believe it or not, I shot this on a Canon PowerShot S3 IS 6MP camera. F8 at one half second. I love my Nikon, but that little Canon took some great shots. I did not use a flash or a tripod for this shot; it was completely hand held.Inspiration
I wanted to get some great fireworks shots and I decided I was just going to blast away at all the fireworks that appeared over my head. I love the artistry of fireworks and I think shot accurately represents them.Editing
I did not do any kind of post processing and, to be perfectly honest, I still do not do any, other than enhancing colors and contrast a bit. I guess I am a Luddite when it comes to Photoshop or any of these other software programs. In my camera bag
Normally, I have my Nikon D3100 DSLR with an 18-55mm lens and a 55-200mm lens, along with my sturdy, ancient Star-D tripod. But, I still like to shoot film (yes, real film; I will continue to do so until there isn't any more film made) so I will tote along my Ricoh XR or Konica Autoreflex T3 or even my old Beauty Canter rangefinder.Feedback
I will tell anyone else what a photographer once told me: ready, shoot, aim. Just put your camera up to your face and blast away. Some of the best shots I have taken were the ones where I shot first and fast, rather than trying to set everything up.
