Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on an island in Adriatic sea on the coast of Croatia. I was on a holiday with my family and I had my camera with me. I was pretty shy shooting on the start of my career, so this was actually the only photo I took in that trip.

Time

It was taken on a walk home from dinner. I have missed the sunset, so it was taken during the blue hour. It was summer, so it had to be around nine or nine thirty in the evening.

Lighting

When i shoot landscapes or cityscapes I always look for interesting lightning. I love the dodge and burned kind of light. Now, if you can find it in nature it saves a lot of time in front of your computer. Unfortunately this kind of situations are quite rare, so often I add light in post processing.

Equipment

I had my Canon 5d Mk II with my favourite 17-40 f/4 L lens. Altogether was mounted on a tripod.

Inspiration

It was actually taken for a family friend who spent hers childhood in this village on Brac island in Croatia. So it was some sort of a thank you gift for spending the holidays in her home.

Editing

Yes. I always post process photos. This is the part I enjoy most in photography. It is one of the main reasons I joined the army of photographers. I do my usual workflow (about this some other time maybe), and then add some interesting light. Of course I take care of the noise and remove unwanted objects that do not contribute to the message I want to send.

In my camera bag

Ha... This is a tricky questions, since I don't own a proper photo bag. There is always something else I want more than a bag. So, what equipment do I normally have in my "normal" bag? I have to start with my all time favourite 17-40 f/4 L lens accompanied with 24-105 f/4 L lens. There is a ND1000 filter, for better long exposure photos. Remote controller and a spare battery. I always take my business cards with me (you never know who you will meet) and sometimes even a sketch book to make sketches of my photos. Oh, and my camera machine Canon 5d Mk III.

Feedback

Capturing a good landscape or cityscape photo is all about what message you want to say through your photo. When you figure this out, you choose your location and then observe it to see when the lightning is the best. I recommend early morning or sunset. But don't be afraid to shoot in the middle of the day. And then the composition. Try to find a good composition, so you get a clean message. Try different angles, different apertures and different positions of your camera. Don't be afraid to use your camera. One thing that is good about digital era, is a possibility of pressing the "trigger" as many times as you wish with no harm done. And my final advice: big SD card :)
