Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken at Sandy Creek Nature Center near Athens, Georgia

Time

It was late afternoon as you can see by the long shadows.

Lighting

A soft canopy on a fall afternoon reflects the golden leaves. A low angle of light layers contrasting horizontal shadows on the trail.

Equipment

Taken with a Canon EOS Rebel XS and an EF-S 18-55mm lens set at 30mm, f6.3, 1/60, ISO 100.

Inspiration

Ed is my sherpa. He carries my gear, drives me to treks, scouts shots, offers suggestions and encouragement. He is also an occasional (and reluctant) model. In this case, he was an unwitting model. Here he shoulders my gear while planning a shot of some autumn ephemerals. Behind him a path trails through our favorite photo haunt, the Sandy Creek Nature Center near Athens, Georgia. SCNC is within 10 minutes of our home so we go often. Yet each time, there is something new to capture: new seasons, new fawns, turtles, snakes, skinks, geese, ducks, beavers, and the iconic Great Blue Heron. A location near enough to visit often has huge advantages. We’ve learned when to catch the beavers busy and where to watch the heron fish, where to take landscapes and where to grab a macro, and from which direction the light comes around each curve at any time of day. Exotic sites are stimulating, but familiar ones make for great practice. So does a good sherpa.

Editing

Minor adjustments were made in Adobe Photoshop including levels, contrast, light vibrance, cropping, and sharpening.

In my camera bag

I now carry a Canon EOS Rebel T3i, a wide-angle zoom, a telephoto zoom, polarizing filter, extra batteries and memory cards, remote switch, lens hoods, compass, granola bars, lens wipe & blower, a black napkin (for covering the back of the camera when the light is too bright). I like to keep it fairly light.

Feedback

Find a location you can get to easily even if its your own backyard. Keep your gear handy, shoot often, and marry someone who enjoys sharing your interests. The curving leading lines of the trail compliment the softness of the golden leaves and lead the eye deep into the woods where the subject will soon turn and walk. The setting and the subject, loaded with gear, tell our story.
