Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at my aunt’s house in the hills near the Bay Area of California. At the time of this shot, she had recently moved; that was the first season of autumn she spent at her new home. I took the opportunity to explore the meadows, creeks and forests around the property!

Time

This was such a memorable day because of the vivid colors! A storm had just passed through, which enhanced the hues within the sky. I took this photo in the afternoon; the grounds were still wet, but luckily it was not too windy! My cousins accompanied me while I took pictures and we were mesmerized by the beauty surrounding us. Once I headed back inside and showed the images to the rest of my family, they were stunned to discover that these photographs were captured in the backyard!

Lighting

Since I took this picture after a storm, there was a natural contrast of the dark clouds between the bright blue shades of the sky. The sun was shining through the storm clouds, which created a sense of mystery and intensified the dramatic effect of the background. This photo would not have been the same if the weather or season was different - these components combined together is what makes the image so compelling.

Equipment

I actually took this photo on my iPhone in November of 2012! No other equipment was involved.

Inspiration

In California we don’t have the luxury of experiencing the seasons, although it is a bit more apparent in the northern portion of the state! I felt an urge to go out and shoot photo’s because I wanted to capture the colors of autumn. Be that as it may, when observing the landscape around me, I became immersed in the uniqueness of the storm aftermath. This picture relays the thoughts in my mind as a photographer at that very moment.

Editing

The vibrancy of this shot was already prominent, so I just decided to sharpen the image and increase the contrast slightly.

In my camera bag

Since this photo was taken, I began using a Canon 70d. Aside from the body, I use my 40mm f/2.8 lens quite often, particularly for portrait shots! It’s especially convenient for traveling because of the size and weight. For landscape and city shots, where I need wider range, I use my 55-250mm f/4-5.6 zoom lens. I also carry around neutral density filters because I like to experiment with long exposures! Usually I will have an extra battery, as well as a memory card. I try to carry around my Manfrotto tripod whenever I can!

Feedback

I was not expecting to capture this picture and I have noticed that many times when I have gotten lucky with a shot, it is during a time where I do not anticipate it. My advice for others would be to enjoy the moment and emulate whatever feelings they are experiencing through the lens in front of them. Work with the environment around you, adjust to the conditions you have and incorporate these aspects in your photo! And be sure to take advantage of seemingly gloomy days of rain storms!
