Location
This photo was taken in Zamami island in Okinawa, Japan. While I had been in Okinawa for my personal project for a couple of weeks, I had a chance to visit one of my favorite islands.Time
After nine in the morning, a local islander I'd known since a year before took me and other friends of mine for a tour of this small island. Most of us were on the back of his small truck, and we went around the island.Lighting
Since the rainy season was just over at the time, the grass and trees looked so green and fresh. The sunlight wasn’t too harsh yet, so it was just about the right moment to capture the Okinawan colors of green, blue, white, and red.Equipment
It was just a quick tour of the island. So, I just grabbed my Nikon D7000 with Nikkor 20mm f/2.8D and got on the back of the small truck.Inspiration
Hibiscus reminded me of the tropical islands, and wherever I went in Okinawa, the flower grabbed my attention. At this moment, four colors of Okinawa fitted in a frame; hibiscus red, blue sky and sea, green leaves, and white clouds.Editing
I used Photoshop and Topaz Adjust to bring up colors and give more contrast to the image. In my camera bag
It depends on whether I’m shooting video or stills. For photography, I only carry a camera body and a lens or two with a Gorillapod. Lately, I take my Panasonic GH3 a lot because of its compact size and lightness.Feedback
Okinawa is a really photogenic place, and it’s even more so in its remote islands. It’s really fun to do photography here, but the weather changes quickly and is unpredictable--especially in summer. The lighting condition changes constantly in a short period of time. So, I think that it’s very important to be responsive. Also, it helps if you have ideas of what kind of images you’re looking for beforehand.
