Location
This photo was taken on a rooftop of a commercial building in the Barbican area in Kingston, Jamaica. They had built up a stage for an event a while back out of wood that had started to look worn out. I liked the look of the wood and decided to use it as a backdrop. This shot was taken while on a location shoot for MUA (Sasha Bowie) and Model (Sherilyn McLean) portfolio.Time
We had taken a few other shots prior to this one on this shoot. Those photos were more focused on the makeup and were mostly close ups. After we got enough of those shots and weren't too concerned about the makeup anymore, we decided to add the element of water to the shoot and this was the end result after a few other trials.Lighting
For this shot I was most interested in catching the water and wanted to ensure that the subject was well lit at the same time. An umbrella was used to spread the light evenly.Equipment
This was shot on a Canon 50D with a 28-135mm EF lens. The flash was an AlienBees B1600 flash unit.Inspiration
The concept for the shoot was "Dazed & Confused" and so all the shots had this kind of look and feel without the water. The MUA had mentioned previously that she always adds this element to all her shoots and so it was always a part of the plan. When on set we hadn't quite figured out how we were gonna add this element and so I began walking around looking for ways to do it. I stumbled upon an empty plastic bin and a couple of bricks....hey now! I gave the suggestion and we decided to give it a try. It took a few attempts to get the water to splash just the way I wanted it but it all worked out.Editing
I didn't do to much post processing for this image. I added a little brightness and increased the saturation for the makeup. I also burned the edges a bit.In my camera bag
I try to keep my kit as light as possible only carrying what I need, after all i'm not trying to lift weights all day here. I now carry a Canon 6D instead of the 50D which is great because it has newer features and is a bit smaller and not as heavy. Next I have a 24-105mm L lens which is my baby, I use this for literally everything. If its going to be a long day, I also take my nifty fifty (Canon 50mm 1.8) since its so light weight and its so awesome in almost all situations! If I get tired this lens literally turns my camera into the best 'GoPro" money can buy. Depending on the project, I will also take my 430EX ii Flash and or a small LED light along with stand and umbrella. On occasion I will also walk with my Canon 16-35mm L instead of the 50mm especially if large groups or landscapes will be a part of the days events. Outside of this, I use my smart phone to show images while shooting to clients so they can preview and approve there shots on location.Feedback
You have to be patient and be prepared to try until you get it right. When you are working with other people it may take a few attempts to get the person to do what you want them to do as well as get the timing right to get the shot.
