Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken just off the strand, London. After meeting my girlfriend at her uni, we went for a walk as it had just stopped raining and the sun popped out. It gave beautiful light and then I saw the reflection of St. Mary's Church.

Time

I don't usually enjoy taking photos within a city as I am a wildlife Photographer. But at around 1pm the light was great and the colours alive.

Lighting

What I like about this photo is how the church stands out and is in juxtaposition with everything else in the frame. Lighting was great at that time. Usually in the middle of the day the light is hard, but with this image the light is soft and slightly diffused, the sun was half popping out from behind one big cloud.

Equipment

Well, with quality and technology rushing forward in leaps and bounds, I do appreciate that I can now just carry my Samsung Phone with me as this shot was taken with my mobile. The nice thing is that it has a manual function and therefore you can achieve desired results just by setting the camera to the settings I would normally use on my Canon DSLR.

Inspiration

I am a wildlife photographer but I do get moved when I see an Historical Building. I get images in my head of people from the past walking and going about their daily lives. This image sprung to me and so I decided to capture it with my girlfriend in it. I hoped to achieve some sort of historical progression of nostalgia to present day London.

Editing

When it comes to post processing, I feel I have to be very careful, I want to keep the photo looking as natural as possible. It is very easy to go to far with post processing and that in turn I feel make the image loose all of its natural appeal. Here I have raised the brightness a little and the contrast. In doing so I have cleared the unnatural haze and brightened up the colour.

In my camera bag

Within my bag I carry an array of things. I have two canon DSLR, a 550D and 450. The reason I have two is that so when I am out and about I have two different lenses on, I have an idea what the subjects and type of shot I want to achieve. It also is great way to keep your camera sensor clean as changing lenses in some environments is detrimental to the cameras quality and maintenance. I also have a Sony HDR 520V HD Camcorder. I have 4 Lenses, namely a 70 -300 stock lens, a 18 -55 mm lens, A macro adapter and lens as well as a 50 mm EF lens for portraits. Cleaning Materials, a tripod and many spare batteries. I also carry two timer remotes which come in very handy for night time shots and also time lapse photography.

Feedback

The only advice I have for anyone using any kind of camera is... play and learn, change settings and keep learning. Try different perspectives for every shot. Don't stand and shoot all the time. But most importantly, shoot in Manual.
