Location
This photo was taken while driving through some of the backroads just outside of Eganville, Ontario. We were just looking to see what was there.Time
It was mid-day, about 2:30 PM as I recall.Lighting
The light was coming in from the south-west. And while I am not usually the guy who loves the possibility of harsh lighting, this scene was perfect. The light allowed the true colours of the moment to shine through like I had not seen them before.Equipment
At the time, I was using a Canon 30D, with a 70-200MM lens, handheld.Inspiration
I am always captivated by colour and the way light plays off of it. Occasionally, I will adjust to B&W, and truth be told, I did check this one out in B&W as well...but the colour was so overwhelming and captivating, that I had to keep it true to the shot! This is beautiful part of the country and what better time of year could I have asked for than the fall to capture this colour. In my eyes...it is nature/ perfection....Editing
This was a beautiful in camera shot, that required little post processing. I am one of those photographers who loves to play with images in various pieces of software (Lightroom, PhotoShop, NIX, etc.) but this one just needed a bit of cropping to take out a couple of extraneous branches. In my camera bag
Generally, I travel with a full compliment of hardware in my bag. Most would wonder why I bother, but I prefer to be prepared, rather than disappointed when an opportunity presents itself. I shoot Canon. My primary body is a 5D Mark III and I carry a back up body (30D) in my bag. As for lenses - Canon - 50MM, 100MM, 70-200MM, 2X Teleconverter, 70-300MM, a set of Kenko extension tubes, and a Sigma 10-20MM. I also keep a pocket camera on hand...just in case. I generally have both a try-pod and monopod in my truck (just in case) Don't forget the rain cover for the camera and lens, a few cleaning cloths, some extra batteries, and most importantly, plenty of memory cards.Feedback
The best advice I could possibly give would be "patience". Remember that Rome wasn't built in a day, and that for every 100 shots you take, very few will make the grade. To get this shot...be attentive to your surroundings, the colours, the light, and what it does to everything as the day progresses. On this particular day, I didn't have a plan. I was simply touring an area, looking for something I could go back and shoot later. An opportunity presented itself. So, yes...patience is key, but always be prepared. When you least expect a beautiful shot to present itself, it will happen. I can't remember how many times I have told a student..."Always carry a camera with you!" (Of course it is much easier today, considering that every smartphone has a camera built in!) Beauty surrounds us every day. Photographic opportunities present themselves at every turn. Be ready...be aware...be there! And, the results will be amazing!
