Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in Masai Mara National park, the most popular park in Kenya due to a great population of predators.

Time

Safari starts early in the morning while animals are still active and it's not too hot. However we spent some time looking for lions and we met this one almost on the way back to the lodge

Lighting

That day was a bit cloudy so we didn't have any special light during golden hour. So we were lucky that sun appeared when we met this lioness with cubs.

Equipment

This was shot with Nikon D700, Nikkor 28-300/3.5-5.6 lense and the bean bag to stabilize the camera in the window of the car

Inspiration

I love animals. They always inspire me with their sincerety. They never harm anyone with no reason or just for money. This lioness was pretty far from the road but we were lucky having permission drivimg off-road in the park so we were able to come closer. In the beginning we didnt see cubs in the grass. Looking at her big belly and blood on the face we knew she just had lunch. I love the grass in fron of her face that showing how high it is. looking at her stressed face we know she cares a lot having her 4 cubs with her. They are almost invisible in that high grass but too small to protect themselves.

Editing

Almost no post processing, maybe a bit more contrast and white balance to show the real colours

In my camera bag

At the moment i don't use this lence, I still have Nikon D700, Nikkor 70-200/2.8, Tamron 150-600 and Nikkor 14-24/2.8 for landscapes. As i need a high speed for capturing moves of animals I have an extra battery. Also for landscapes i use the tripod Slick

Feedback

You need to understanf the behaviour of animals or a good ranger who help you. I always travel with local ranger cz they are living there and know everything better. At that moment ranger knew where the lioness going so we could got forward and wait when it comes to us. It was going to the small river to drink after lunch. The river was almost invisible so we would never fing it withour the ranger. And also very important to be patient and wait the right moment while taking pics of wild animals.
