Behind The Lens

Location

Out of my back door in Battle Creek, MI in November 2012.

Time

About an hour after sunset

Lighting

The camera's flash provided the foreground lighting on the snowflakes. The background was natural early evening light.

Equipment

Camera: Sony DSLR A200 Aperture: f/5.6 ISO: 400 Exposure: 1/5 A tripod was used with a remote shutter release.

Inspiration

In early evening a November snow started to fall. When I looked out into the backyard the snowflakes were very large (about one inch in diameter), and the early evening light and the new fallen snow on the trees invited me to try to capture the scene.

Editing

I adjusted the lighting in the background to better show the snow on the trees. Everything else other than the flash on the snowflakes in the foreground was natural light and color.

In my camera bag

An older Sony A200 DLSR, 3 lenses: Sony 75-300mm, Sony 18-70mm and a Promaster 90mm, a remote shutter release,a macro attachment for the 90mm.

Feedback

Use a flash to light up the snowflakes in the foreground and a tripod and remote switch or timer because of the slow shutter speed. Use a shutter speed slow enough to capture the light but fast enough not to blur the snowflakes. After several shots I found the 1/5 sec shutter speed worked the best.
