Location
It's a surprisingly mundane location, actually. It was a hedgerow in the very suburban area where I live.Time
It was mid-day. I hadn't gone out with the intention of taking photos - so this was taken with my phone, which is one of the beautiful things about modern phone cameras. It doesn't matter where or when; you can produce beautiful images.Lighting
It was raining, which creates a rather lovely tenebrous quality to light.Equipment
I used a phone! Just a simple, modern smartphone. The quality of images one can achieve now is staggering.Inspiration
The dew on the leaf. It's something that I've always found beautiful. The refractive, gleaming quality beaded dew gives is lovely. Combined with the contrast of colour, I just had to stop.Editing
The photo is considerably processed, which was deliberate. The aim was to highlight the contrast of colour that was naturally present in the leaf, and bring out the sharpness of the dew. The saturation and vibrancy were therefore increased, as well as the highlights and shadows. In my camera bag
I'm a huge proponent of phoneography, which this photo is an example of. To that end, my smartphone is always with me and I therefore always have a tool at hand. In my camera bag, I have a Canon 1100D, along with the two lenses I'm currently using. These are a 75-300mm lens and a fixed 50mm lens. In addition to this, I have filters for the lenses.Feedback
I'm an admitted amateur when it comes to photography, and I like that this photo is one which I took with a phone. That's because it demonstrates the importance of keeping an eye out for opportunity - the ability to notice something as small as a dew-laden leaf perfectly positioned so as to catch the light. That's key. Composition is a crucial skill in capturing a great image. Anyone can see what we see. Composition is what enables us to create an image from this.
