Location
This picture was taken in the heart of Berlin during the annual Festival of Lights. The 'Berliner Dom' is across the street of a place called Humboldt Box, which has a Restaurant with terrace on it's roof - a brilliant location to take a snap of the Berliner DomTime
This was during the blue hour after sunset. The streets are very busy allowing for the trailing lights with a not to long exposure.Lighting
The lighting is all natural. Make sure to come in at a time that reflects your your street busy-ness desires. However, the Restaurant is probably not accessible in the morning.Equipment
The picture was taken with a Pentax K7, a tripod is mandatory at the lower light conditions.Inspiration
During the week of the festival of lights, I was watching the local news on a city tv channel. They presented the Homboldt Box location, and I immediately thought that this was going to be a really great picture when the Dom was illuminated with all kinds of special light motives.Editing
I really pass all my raw pictures through Adobe Lightroom. Other than cooking the colours, there is nothing special in Post for this image. In my camera bag
I always carry my iPhone - that makes a good location scout device. When I try to get serious pics, It depends on location. My standard gear is a Pentax K3, A DA 40mm limited pancake lens and a gorilla hand mini tripod, which fits right in my small backpack. It's surprising on how well you can attach it to all kinds of 'poles' that are around places. Only on planned low light long exposure landscape shots do I carry a Manfrotto Carbon tripod that gives a decent weight to stability ratio.Feedback
Check this years Festival of Lights dates. It usually takes place in October. All kinds of places are illuminated in various special ways - its a week full of opportunities to experiment with special night shots.
