Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in a nightclub called Venus in Manchester, UK, surrounded by ravers, dancers and some rather drunk people!

Time

This was taken late at night on Boxing Day last year

Lighting

The room this was taken in was very dark, apart from several flashing (and colourful!) lights and lasers. To capture this image, I used a double flash on a single exposure, so what you are seeing is one person who was throwing her head (and hair) from side to side

Equipment

I used a Canon 5D Mk ii with a Canon 15mm f2.8 fisheye, and a Canon Speedlite 580 EX ii

Inspiration

I had attended a nightclub event previously, where another photographer called Nathan D'Amour was plying his trade, and was blown away by his use of in-camera trickery to capture some awesome pictures. Using him as my inspiration, I began trying out all sorts of settings I wouldn't have used otherwise the next time I went out, and found that nightclubs are particularly great for allowing me to capture some unusual yet dramatic images

Editing

The only post-processing I did was my standard post-processing, which includes the basics such as checking the exposure/contrast/clarity, etc, in Lightroom. No 'special effects' were applied at all

In my camera bag

The equipment I usually have include a Canon 5D Mk iii (my Mk ii is now my back-up), a Canon 16-35mm f2.8 lens so I can go wide, a Canon 70-200mm f2.8 so I can go long(ish), a Canon 15mm f2.8 fisheye (not just a one-trick-pony, as someone recently claimed to me….I saw it as a challenge, and like to think I proved him wrong with the very next picture I took….got myself a free drink out of it too!), and a Canon Speedlite 580 EX ii (a wonderful flash)

Feedback

Well, firstly I couldn't have taken this image with my back-up flash (a Canon Speedlite 430 EX ii), so grab yourself a flash that allows multiple bursts. It would also help if you're in a dark setting as you would need a long exposure, and anywhere too bright would've led to the image being over-exposed. And find yourself a free-spirited, slightly intoxicated (well, maybe not 'slightly'), inhibition-less dancer with long hair and a penchant for throwing it around a lot, and just fire away. In a nightclub setting, experimentation is the key….
