Location
This was taken in East Boston, MA at Piers Park.Time
At sunset, just as the sun fell below the buildings.Lighting
The light that day was incredibly diffused, I was surprised at how purple the sky was that day. Although the image has been altered a little to show just how purple it was, the lighting played a huge role in this photo.Equipment
No tripod, I used the railing that you see in the bottom right of the photo. No flash Camera was a Canon Rebel XS and I'm pretty sure I was just using the standard 18-55 at this time.Inspiration
Spontaneity, I didn't really anticipate taking this photo, the opportunity arrived and I took it. Very cold day in the harbor.Editing
This was a very long exposure, on a railing with no tripod. I did have to do some noise reduction and I saturated the violets to show my interpretation of that night. In my camera bag
Normally I carry a Canon 7D, 70-200 F/2.8L, 135 F/2, 24-105, and 100mm Macro F/2.8L, and of course a 50mm 1.8. As for lighting on-the-go, I carry a yongnuo or 2 with a flash cable for off camera work.Feedback
Patience, this particular shot was done about 50 times before it was gotten as sharp as I possibly could. As mentioned it was a very cold day, no tripod, and as you can imagine on the harbor it's pretty windy. It doesn't matter what lens you have or what equipment, those things are just tools to make your life easier. This shot would have been easy had I been equipped with the proper setup, however it's always better getting a great shot when you know you had to really really work for it.
