Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in my garage. Not very glamorous but it's the only place I have in the house where the wife will allow me to set up the makeshift studio.

Time

I don't remember what time of day this was taken but it doesn't really matter as it wad taken in doors using off csmera flash.

Lighting

I wanted to have half of my face in shadow as I had seen other examples of these kinds of self portraits and I really liked the mood this lighting effect evokes.

Equipment

Nikon D7000, sigma 105mm 2.8, manfrotto tripod, yongnuo yn-560 ii flash gun

Inspiration

I don't really like photos of myself, I prefer to be on the other side of the camera however I have tried numerous self portrait ideas and this is one of the better ones in my own opinion :)

Editing

I would have done little post processing except for maybe ensuring the background was completely black and using the spot healing brush to get rid of any noticeable blemishes on my face.

In my camera bag

Since purchasing the sigma 105 mm 2.8 I have barely taken it off my D7000 body. It produces very sharp images and even though I love macro photography I find it is brilliant for portraits too.

Feedback

Being an amateur photgrapher who is still learning about this wonderful hobby I don't think I am best placed to offer others advice but if I was pushed I would say just take as many photos as you can playing with the position of the flash and see if you find something you like.
