This photo was taken early afternoon, around 1pmLighting
This is an outdoor exhibit at the zoo, so all natural lighting. It was a very hot, sunny June afternoon, no clouds, just blue sky and sun.Equipment
I shoot a Nikon D3200. The lens I was using this day was a Nikkor 55-300mm. I took this without a tripod, simply used the fence to brace myself for the shot.Inspiration
It was a very hot day at the zoo and most of the animals were sleeping and inactive. When I got to the giraffe exhibit, I was thrilled to see that they were actually moving around and grazing. As soon as I saw the baby lean down and place her head on the adult giraffe, I just started taking photos. I knew that if I could capture that moment, I'd have a great photo. :)Editing
I use Lightroom 5 for post editing. Other than cropping and an adjustment of the vibrance and saturation, this is straight out of the camera. In my camera bag
I'm just getting started, so I only have 3 lenses, the kit Nikkor 18-55mm and Nikkor 55-300mm. I've recently added the Nikkor 35mm prime f1.8g and it has become my primary lens for taking pet photos.Feedback
In the words of my instructor, always have your camera set for your current cinditions so that you are ready to capture a shot when the moment presents itself. An animal won't wait to do something cute or awesome while you're messing around with your camera settings :)
